About University of Georgia

The University of Georgia, also known as UGA, is a public research university, located in Athens, GA, which was founded in 1785, representing the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in the state.


The university was incorporated in January, 1785, by the Georgia General Assembly, but it wasn't officially conceived until July 2, 1799, when the Senatus Academicus decided that it was the right time to begin building the university.


UGA was closed during the America Civil War, more exactly in October 1863, being reopened in January 1866, with an enrollment of only 78 students.


The University of Georgia gained a respectable academic reputation when the Georgia's HOPE Scholarship program was started in 1993, also growing in size, having today an enrollment of more than 30 000 students, providing faculty study abroad on every continent, including Antarctica.


UGA offers students numerous and various academic programs and degrees through 16 different schools and colleges, such as the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the Terry College of Business, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, School of Law School of Public and International Affairs and the Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology.


It has been highly ranked for both its graduate and undergraduate programs by U.S. News & World Report and BusinessWeek, as well as by several other top educational-related magazines.


The athletic teams at UGA are known as the Bulldogs, participating in the NCAA's Division I-A, the university being a member of the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs have won several national championships in baseball, football, tennis, gymnastics, golf, diving, swimming and women's equestrian.

Facts & Short history of Athens

Athens was officially named a town in December 1806, becoming a significant supply center during the American Civil War. Over the years, Athens continued to grow, and by its centennial celebration, in 1901, it was a changed city.


In 1881, the Athens Police Department was founded, and in the fall of 1886, several public schools were opened. The first telephone service was first introduced in the city by the Bell Telephone Company, in 1882.


In 1904, a new city hall was completed and the first tall building was constructed in 1908, which was the seven-story Southern Mutual Insurance Company building.


In 2008, the population of Athens City was estimated at a number of more than 100 000 inhabitants, being the 5th largest city in Georgia.


The climate of Athens is warm during summer, the hottest month of the year being known to be July, bringing to the city temperatures as high as 90°F. Athens experiences low temperatures of 32°F in January, considered to be the coldest month of the year. March is the wettest month of the year, with an average rainfall of 4.99 inches.
